Spring into action

As the seasons transition, so does our approach to physical activity.

This week, I found myself pondering this very thought as I stepped into my regular yoga class, Everyday Yoga, on Thursday night.

With the arrival of spring, our activities naturally evolve. In class, amidst a fresh blanket of March snow, I decided to incorporate an unexpected element…

Snowflakes. ❄️

You might be wondering how snowflakes fit into a yoga class.

Well, as I observed the changing landscape outside, I realized the falling snowflakes could serve as a tool to enhance balance for my students. This simple yet effective technique involved focusing on a moving snowflake or any other mobile element of nature that captures your attention, while balancing on one foot.

Whether it's the sway of tree branches in the brisk spring breeze or the gentle patter of raindrops forecasting a shift in weather, nature offers endless inspiration for finding balance.

Here is the challenge:

Standing on one foot, with the option of using support if needed, watch nature as it moves. Allows yourself to synchronize your balance with the movements and rhythm of the season.

Do you best to stay balanced as the eyes feast on the natural aspects of nature.

Come in and out of the balance as you need.

You might surprise yourself with this new way to challenge your balance!

Why not embrace the changes unfolding around us and incorporate them into our fitness routines?

As we anticipate the shifting landscape, let's welcome it as an opportunity to elevate our physical activity.

I invite you to join me in exploring new avenues for movement this spring.

If you're seeking to infuse your workout routine with fresh energy, consider joining my three-week Nordic Walking program, Take Your Walking to the Next Level. This introductory program, based in Edmonton, Alberta, offers a blend of in-person sessions and online resources to help you step up your walking game.

Let's embrace the transformations of spring and discover how they can inspire a renewed commitment to our health and well-being.

I look forward to embarking on this journey with you. Further information about the program is provided below.

Stay well and happy moving,
Lisa

It is in the simple fist pump

Are you a sports fan?

Whether you are or not, here is an example that transcends the boundaries of sports fandom, revealing the profound impact of community in our lives. It's a story that unfolded during a recent NHL hockey game, but its essence resonates far beyond the rink.

Last week, amidst the fervour of an Edmonton Oilers game against the Washington Capitals, something remarkable happened. With the Oilers comfortably ahead, a seemingly routine goal by player Connor Brown ignited an unexpected eruption of joy from the crowd.

But why such jubilation for a single goal in a game already decided?

The significance lay not in the goal's impact on the game's outcome, but in what it symbolized for Brown--a milestone moment marking his first goal as an Edmonton Oiler.

The fans' exuberance wasn't just about celebrating victory; it was a testament to the bond between players and supporters, a demonstration of community spirit.

In reflecting on this, it's clear that communities extend far beyond the realm of sports. Think about the communities you've been a part of—whether in religious gatherings, educational settings, or shared hobbies. In those spaces of common purpose, barriers dissolve, and collective strength emerges.

Also this week, I unexpectedly found myself immersed in a sense of community during a visit to the local recreation centre for a swim.

As I neared the end of my workout, I decided to challenge myself with a series of 25-meter freestyle sprints, sharing the lane with fellow swimmers.

After completing seven sprints, I began to feel my energy wane, contemplating that the eighth sprint might be my last. Pausing at the edge of the pool to catch my breath, I was surprised when my lane mate extended his fist towards me. Initially puzzled by the gesture, I soon realized he was offering a fist pump—a simple yet powerful acknowledgment of my effort and dedication.

Grateful for the unexpected encouragement, I reciprocated the gesture and found renewed determination.

Rather than stopping at eight sprints as initially planned, I pushed myself to complete a total of 12.

Amidst the rhythmic strokes and shared space, a simple gesture—a fist pump—spoke volumes.

While a fist pump may not possess magical abilities, in that moment, it served as a reminder of the supportive community surrounding me.

In the shared space of the swimming pool, this fellow swimmer became more than just a lane mate; he became a source of encouragement, support, and recognition. Swimming alongside others, we forged a bond that transcended the water, illustrating the profound impact of community in even the most unexpected places.

Research underscores the benefits of being physically active within a community—enhanced motivation, accountability, and overall well-being. But community isn't just about being physically present; it's about fostering connections, providing support, and amplifying each other's efforts.

And speaking of community, there's something exciting on the horizon—a new opportunity to deepen our connections and amplify our physical activity behaviours. It is going to be an up level experience and I can't wait to invite YOU - my email community! Stay tuned for updates on an upcoming initiative designed to empower and unite us in our pursuit of movement and well-being.

But in the meantime, let's keep the conversation going. Share your experiences of community support in your physical activity endeavours. Hit reply and tell me about a time when a community—whether formal or informal—played a pivotal role in your health journey.

And for those ready to elevate their walking routine, consider joining the upcoming Take Your Walking to the Next Level: Introduction to Nordic Walking series. Registration is open now, with the program set to commence on April 3rd. Are you ready to step into a new level of movement and connection? Let's do it together!

As we continue to journey together, let's embrace the power of community—to inspire, to uplift, and to propel us toward our shared goals of health and vitality.

Stay well and happy moving,
Lisa

Can I bring a friend?

3/10/2024

Embarking on a new fitness journey can be daunting.

Whether it's trying out a new activity or stepping into unfamiliar territory, having a friend by your side can make all the difference. As the saying goes, "safety in numbers" isn't just about feeling secure; it's about connection and community.

Think about how many times you've asked, "Can my friend come?"

It's not just about having someone there for safety—it's about sharing experiences and creating bonds.

When we're trying something new, especially in physical activity, having a familiar face alongside can ease nerves and boost confidence. Walking into a new facility or class alone can leave you feeling uncertain and out of place.

That's where the support of friends and family comes in. Their presence provides comfort, guidance, and encouragement.

In today's individualistic world, we often forget the power of doing things together.

Shared experiences enrich our lives and strengthen our connections with others. So when someone asks, "Can I bring my friend?" the answer is a resounding yes.

Community shapes our experiences profoundly. Whether it's sharing laughter, tears, or simply offering a supportive presence, having someone alongside can make the hard things in life a little easier to bear.

And when it comes to physical activity, why go it alone when you can have someone cheering you on?

That's why I'm excited to introduce my new program, Take Your Walking to the Next Level: An Introduction to Nordic Walking 3-Week Experience.

Join me and a group of like minded walkers as we explore the great outdoors together. Walking with poles might seem daunting at first, but with the support of a group, you'll feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin.

But it's not just about feeling supported during the activity itself; community support is crucial for maintaining motivation and sticking to a fitness routine. Research consistently shows that having a strong network of friends, family, and community members significantly impacts our ability to stay active.

Communities not only provide motivation but also foster a sense of belonging and connection. When we exercise with others who share similar interests and goals, we feel a sense of camaraderie that enhances our overall experience. This sense of belonging makes exercise more enjoyable and sustainable in the long run.

So let's embrace the power of connection and community. Together, we can step into spring with a newfound spring in our step. Call/text your friend to invite them to join us for Take Your Walking to the Next Level program and let's make this journey one to remember.
Count me in!
Stay well and happy moving,
Lisa

✨ P.S., Do you also want to build a connection with yourself? Join me this Friday, March 15 for a Rest and Rejuvenation Sleep Mediation. Online or in person options. Connect to yourself before you connect with others. Hope to see you then!
