As I noted in a previous blog post about the Provincial Fitness Unit`s Fit Rendezvous conference, I attended an excellent session on leadership. Laurel Vespi, personal life coach, presented to the AFLCA Trainers of Leaders on “what it takes to be a great leader”. She utilized the book, The Leadership Challenge* as her platform for our discussions and led the session with great enthusiasm to help us move forward as fitness leaders and the AFLCA forward as an organization. Interestingly, she touched on the top four characteristics of what people look for and admire in leaders. Any guess what they are? 1. HONEST 2. FORWARD-LOOKING 3. INSPIRING 4. COMPETENT Over the next couple months, I plan to finish reading The Leadership Challenge and work on my own leadership skills. I will of course share what I learn in future blog posts! Now I`ve told you about it I might need to read fast because I’ll need to return the copy I have back to the Edmonton Public Library! But not to worry as I`m very tempted to buy myself a copy! Summer is a great time for this kind of personal growth and reflection. What can you do to work on your leadership skills for the start of your classes in the Fall? As like every year, I take a break from my blog over the summer. I challenge you to delve into your leadership qualities while the days are long and sunny. Take time for you this summer! * The Leadership Challenge is based on over 25 years of
leadership research by authors James Kouzes and Barry Posner. It is evidenced based data, which I love!

I think Inspiration and motivation should be given priority as this are necessarily be required by a leader and when others fail than it is the motivation which works.
