This can be a difficult question to answer because both listening to your body and avoiding exercise can look very similar from the outside. In both cases, you may decide not to exercise today. The difference is often found in the thoughts and feelings behind that decision. Sometimes your body is genuinely asking for rest, recovery, or a different approach to movement. Perhaps you're exhausted. Perhaps you're recovering from illness, injury, or a particularly stressful period of life. Perhaps the type of exercise you're trying to do simply isn't a good fit for you anymore. In those moments, choosing not to exercise may actually be an act of listening to your body. But there are other times when the decision comes from a different place. It may come from frustration. It may come from fear. It may come from disappointment about what your body can or cannot do today. You might notice thoughts such as:
Rather than listening to your body, you may be reacting to your feelings about your body. One question I often encourage people to explore is: What is the tone of my thoughts right now? Are your thoughts compassionate, curious, and supportive? Or are they critical, frustrated, and dismissive? Listening to your body often feels like partnership. Avoidance often feels like resistance. Because when you understand whether your choice is coming from wisdom or from conflict, you can respond more intentionally. Sometimes your body truly needs rest. Sometimes it needs movement. And sometimes it simply needs you to treat it with a little more kindness.
